Originally published in 1965, this short novel was reissued in 2006 by the NY Review of Books (Classic Series). It is just a simple story of a William Stoner’s life….start to finish. He was born in the late 1800s and destined to be a hardscrabble farmer. He fell in love with English Literature and it changed the course of his life. Stoner became a university professor, writer, husband, and father but was never very successful at any of them. One of the unusual things about this book is the deceptively straightforward way it is told. It almost reads like a history book, but Stoner’s stoic nature as he endures tragedy and faces adversity causes the reader to care deeply about him.
