I’ve read all of Ariana Franklin’s books now. This book has been on my TBR list for a couple of years, but I didn’t want to read it because that would mean there would be no more books for me by Ariana Franklin. She is an amazing writer. She can plot a tale to make anything interesting.
The “City of Shadows” is Berlin during the emergence of the Nazi Party. The protagonists are mainly Russians fleeing Bolshevism and Jewish immigrants fleeing pogroms. Many characters are based on real people….including Anna Anderson who claimed she was the Romanov Princess Anastasia. I had little interest in the White Russians and the ersatz princess, until I started this book, but as always, Ms. Franklin writes a compelling read with complex characters. It was informative, entertaining, and a thrill-ride.
