This new policy might have a negative impact on children, as often many children’s books are checked out at one time. If the adult with the child is not returning books on time, then late charges could prevent children from getting books.

Maybe you will consider a “Forgiveness Day” (or whatever it might be named) once or twice a year. While the library would not be getting the late charges, it would be getting the BOOKS back. Purchasing and processing a library item is probably more costly than its late charges.

Thanks for th opportunity to comment.

I hope Library can call the account holder’s phone if the book is already 10 days late, so that they could avoid to incur such high fee.

There is still a maximum fee of $5 per item. The new policy only affects patrons who have more than five items that have been overdue for more than 20 days each or have lost or damaged books on their record.

I agree that this new policy will have a negative impact on children. When children’s books are checked out 10+ at a time that really adds up. Though there are several ways to renew books, it is an easily overlooked task.

Will there be a way to pay late fees online in the near future?

We are working with the county to enable online and in-person credit card processing. Unfortunately, I don’t have an ETA as to when it might be rolled out. We have patrons asking about credit card use on a daily basis and are trying to get it up and running as soon as possible.
