Northgate Mall and Durham County Library are pleased to announce an ongoing partnership to produce free, kid-centered educational reading events at the mall with the launch of the Discovery Nook Saturday, May 17.
Located in Northgate’s Children’s Alleyway between entrance 2 and 4, the Discovery Nook is a dedicated kid-friendly, educational zone featuring books, stories, drama, local authors and fun with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
The first event celebrates National Children’s Book Week, May 12-17, 2014. It is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m., and features science-based stories read by Durham County Library Youth Partners (LYPs).
The stories will be followed by hands-on science activities led by Mad Science staff and the Library Youth Partners. “Young children and their families will have fun as they explore science and math,” said Karlene Fyffe Phillips, Youth Services Administrator for the library. “They can enjoy stories, and then get their hands dirty with crafts and science activities!”
All participants will receive a free book to continue the reading fun at home.
During National Children’s Book Week, the Discovery Nook will feature book displays and information about the Summer Reading Program and other Durham County Library events.
In addition to the Library Youth Partner presentations scheduled every third Saturday of the month, the Discovery Nook will regularly showcase a variety of local acting troupes, STEM organizations, museums and other agencies.
