Come one, come all! It's carnival time in Colleton County! Enjoy the elephant ears...at least until you happen upon a corpse with his mouth filled with quarters, like Deborah does. Even worse, she learns that the dead carnival worker, Brazos Hartley, is related to her (he was the heretofore unknown grandson of one of her much older brothers). As the family reconciles this news, another murder occurs, and Sheriff Dwight Bryant and Deborah work closely to figure out who's killing people under the brightly colored lights of the small carnival.
