Join Catherine W. Bishir, Architectural Records Special Collections at North Carolina State University Libraries, for a talk and discussion on her book, Crafting Lives: African American Artisans in New Bern, North Carolina, 1770-1900. From the colonial period onward, free and enslaved black artisans in southern cities played vital roles in their communities. Bishir creates a portrayal of urban African American artisans in the small but important port city of New Bern, highlighting the community’s often unrecognized importance in the history of nineteenth-century black life. A book signing will follow the reading.
