Scope and Content: The collection consists of photocopies of Bryant’s extensive collection of primarily local newspaper obituaries and funeral service programs, which he has assembled over the course of his 60-odd years as a Durham resident. The materials often contain biographical and genealogical information on their subjects. The materials are arranged in alphabetical order.

Biographical/Historical Note: Born in 1907, Bryant was raised in Rocky Mount, N.C., and was graduated from the local Booker T. Washington High School in 1935. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hampton University in 1940. His career at Durham’s North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company spanned over 37 years, and saw him rise from chief clerk of the Ordinary Department to the company’s assistant secretary. His dedication to the Durham community and to the study of Durham history has been exceptional and, in 2006, the Historic Preservation Society of Durham awarded him their Bartlett Durham Award. He has held positions of leadership in the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina and Jurisdiction and in several other Durham community organizations and institutions, including the White Rock Baptist Church, the Triangle Land Conservancy, and the Durham Business and Professional Chain.
