Scope and Content: The collection contains programs of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Durham Alumnae Chapter’s “Jabberwock,” an annual debutante ball and talent showcase in which the winning contestant is crowned Jabberwock Queen. The event celebrates elegance and scholarship and provides a platform for the Chapter to thank its contributors and members. Each program contains a brief history of the sorority, a list of members and patrons, profiles of the contestants, and notes of congratulations and gratitude.

Biographical/Historical Note: With its focus on the African American community, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was established in 1913 at Howard University as a public service sorority which centers around educational, economic, and urban development, as well as community and international involvement, mental health, and the advancement of African American arts. The first Durham chapter was established by two Hillside High School teachers, Mary Lee Fisher Morris and Minnie Pearson Turner Spaulding. Existing first as a graduate chapter known as Alpha Kappa Signma, the Durham Alumnae Chapter was officially chartered on April 25, 1941.
