Scope and Content: The Parker Family Papers consist of materials donated by Joyce Daye Clayton, granddaughter of Nancy and Hubert Parker. The papers contain a large quantity of correspondence, mostly of Nancy and her sons. They also include financial records and other materials that document the everyday life of the Parker family as African-American farmers in the 1940s and 50s.

Biographical/Historical Note: Hubert Parker was born September 1884 in Mangum, Orange County, and Nancy Langford Parker was born in March of 1899 in Durham County. The two were married in December 1916 in the midst of World War I. They were farmers in Rougemont, Durham County, until the the farm was repossessed during hard times. Hubert had four daughters from a previous marriage, and Hubert and Nancy had nine children: Emma Lois, Stroud Thomas, Nancy Rebecca, Allie Alberta, Linein Howard, Darnell Thomas, William Eris, Columbus Warren, and Hubert Benson Parker. After her husband died in 1936, Nancy strove to take care of her family during the Depression and afterward by cleaning and cooking for others and with help from her family. For a brief period during the Depression the family reluctantly resorted to receiving federal assistance. Nancy died in 1965.
