Abstract:
Scope and Content: The Shirley Jones Mallard Genealogical Papers consist of family documents and research that Shirley Jones Mallard used in writing her book Our Mangum Cousins, which follows the descendants of Jesse Mangum and related families: Chappell, Crabtree, Duke, Ellis, Jacobs, Roberts, Teasley, Veasey, and Wilkins. Also included are materials relating to the Tilley, Carrington, Ball, Parrish, Person, Umstead, Lunsford, and Parker families. Most of the materials are original or copies of original obituraries, wills, newspaper clippings, census reports, birth certificates, photographs, letters, research notes, land deeds, and other items concerning related family members from the 1600s to the present day. They are arranged according to Mallard’s original compilation of the materials into volumes of notebooks. As many of the items are not original, but are compilations of information from original materials, they have been dated according to their year of compilation, if known.
Related Materials: The papers of Willie Person Mangum
Restrictions: The collection is open for research.
Biographical/Historical Note: Local historian and genealogist Shirley Jones Mallard (nee: Shirley Ann Jones) began researching her family history after the death of her mother in 1972. After thirty years of research, she published Our Mangum Cousins in 2005, which compiled the history of Mangum family line and related families. Her research brought her into contact with primary sources that are valuable to Durham County history, including old photographs of early Mangums, land deeds, and census reports. She has also published works on the Jones, Holsomback, and Marcus Harris Mangum families, the Bahama community in Durham County, the appointment of North Carolina postmasters, and other works of local history and genealogy.
