Abstract:
Scope and Content: The collection consists of a tax notebook which appears to have been kept by one or more tax supervisors of Durham County. The notebook compiles yearly real estate and propety valuations, budgetary information, and tax collections, many of which are itemized by race. Also included are 1991 notes from a departmental work session.

Biographical / Historical Note: The country commissioners created the tax supervisor’s office in 1927 as a means of providing an internal check on the listing of real estate and personal property in the county. From 1923 through 1926, valuation of property listed on the tax books averaged $193,074 per year. In 1927, the first year the office operated, value of listed property rose to $764, 339.
