Scope and Content: School records for Lizzie and Carrie Burch, daughters of George W. Burch, date from 1885-1892 and 1899. Methodist newspapers, including the Christian Advocate (Nashville, TN) and the Raleigh Christian Advocate (Raleigh, NC), are addressed to George W. Burch and date from 1884-1885.

Biographical/Historical Note: George W. Burch was head of the flavoring department at Blackwell’s Durham Tobacco Company from as early as 1887 to around 1908. From 1908 to 1910 he worked for a short-lived New York-based company, Khedivial Tobacco Company, which opened a cigarette factory in Durham while an anti-trust lawsuit was pending against the American Tobacco Company (owner of the Blackwell company beginning in 1901).
