

Description: North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company building. N.C. Mutual is the first black-owned insurance company in the United States, organized in 1898 by John Merrick and Dr. A. M. Moore. This building, on Parrish Street (also known as "Black Wall Street"), was completed in 1921. N.C. Mutual became the nation's largest black-owned insurance company. A new building was completed in 1966.
