New Durham County Library Website

After listening to your comments and suggestions, we are excited to launch the brand new Durham County Library website.

Our old website served us well for over five years, but it was time for a refresh to keep up with advances in technology and, more importantly, to better serve the Durham community.

Here are a few of the improvements you will see as you explore the new site:

  • Based on your feedback, we’ve put searching front and center. The new, large search box on the home page will have you quickly finding books, movies, and music in our new online catalog which was launched earlier this year.
  • The new home page is streamlined to provide you with the most-requested site features such as the ability to quickly view library hours and get help with your library needs.
  • The new navigation menu breaks the site into five distinct and logical sections to help you find information quickly and be on your way.
  • A new, modern design to match Durham County’s new logo and colors unveiled last year.
  • Less scrolling! Website pages use tabs and expandable content modules to eliminate the need for scrolling through long pages.
  • Redesigned North Carolina Collection, Kids and Teen sections of the site.
  • If you’re viewing the site on a mobile phone, pages will automatically rearrange themselves to fit your device. Nor more pinching and zooming to try and read content that was meant to be read on a computer screen.

These are just a few of the many changes you will see, but just because the site has launched does not mean it is complete. In fact, it will never be complete as we will continue to refine it based on users’ needs and suggestions.

As with anything new in the technology world, there will be some kinks to work out as more people use the site. If you come across anything that isn’t working the way it should, please let us know by emailing

Note: The site is compatible with all major, current web browsers. It is supported in Internet Explorer back to version 8. If you have a version of IE prior to version 8, we recommend upgrading your browser to IE 9+ or the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox or Safari.

Are you kidding? You can’t be serious. This is terrible. I can’t find a place to log on and renew items on loan. Please go back to the old website.

I’m sorry you are having problems with the site. The top right of every page has a link to log in to your account.

I am sorry but I do not see a log in link in the right hand corner at the top. I even tried to mouse over the area. I have IE7. Why is there a push to always upgrade to IE “PLUS” every few years or so? What was wrong with the old site as if the old verion or IE7 wasn’t good enough? Couldn’ve they have had added the social media buttons to the old site? I can sense a lot of people are upset by this new site and so call upgrade……

I could log into the old site, but I cannot logon to anymore (July 5). I can not access the “ask” link to get logon help.

You can access the “Ask” pages, by going to the DCL home page and, under the Need Help? section, clicking Email or Chat — however you would like to get help.

You can login to your account by clicking Log In at the top right of any page on the website.

Why does the “front-and-center” search feature open a new tab/window? It goes to a different site, which still has the old login capability. The new login page seems to block being remembered, which is totally useless for me. Can you let the browsers remember our logins, please?

    • Durham County Library July 8, 2013 at 9:31 am #

Since our online catalog is on a different system than the website, it opens in a new window to make it easier for users to get back to the main website if they wish.

Your web browser should offer to remember your password the first time you log in from the new website. If it doesn’t, check your browser’s settings to be sure it is set to remember passwords. Since the browser opens a new tab or window when you log in, you may have to click back to the original tab/window to see the remember password message.

We have a login on the website and on the catalog because some people like to go directly to the catalog to begin their search instead of the website. With two logins, people can access their account from the catalog or website.

We used to be able to view a new movie list that came out weekly. Can’t seem to locate this site. Find this “new” website difficult at best. Liked the old one.

The new DVD and CD list is under the Find Materials tab. Here’s a direct link

Is there a way to view new book lists?

        • Durham County Library July 17, 2013 at 8:48 am #

Unfortunately, our catalog does not offer a great way to view new books. However, if you perform a blank search then sort by publication date, you can get a sense of the newer books. Once you search, you can filter by subject or genre using the controls on the left side of the page.
