About: Durham County Library will partner with Sister Cities of Durham to host Willa Brigham, member of the African American Quilt Circle of Durham, for a tour of six Sister City quilts on Saturday, October 19 at 3 p.m. at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St.

Quilts reflect America’s heritage and diverse cultural traditions. To foster exploration of other unique global quilting traditions, Sister Cities of Durham recently commissioned quilts from each of its Sister City partners. Durham’s Sister Cities are Durham, UK (sister city since 1975); Kostroma, Russia and Toyama, Japan (sister cities since 1989); Arusha, Tanzania (sister city since 1991) and the newest city Zhuzhou, China (sister city since 2012). Quilts from each of these cities will be on display during the program.

Brigham is an Emmy award-winning storyteller. She is a writer of short stories, poetry and songs and is the host of WRAL’s television show, “Smart Start Kids.” Sister Cities is an international, non-profit, citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between U.S. and international communities to increase global cooperation and mutual respect and understanding at the local level. Sister Cities of Durham is 25 years old and supports ongoing projects and exchanges with six international partners.
