New Year, New Device?

December and January typically show a surge in our ebook checkout statistics as people receive new tablets, phones or e-readers for the holidays and get themselves setup with our ebook lending service OverDrive. We have selected thousands of fiction and nonfiction ebooks and e-audiobooks for you to checkout, download and read on your portable device or computer.

Ebooks on a smartphone

Read books on your phone, tablet, e-reader or computer.

If you’re one of those with a hot, new device in your hand and need a little help getting started with OverDrive, we have helpful guides for all popular devices on our Ebook Help page. Before you begin, make sure you have your Durham County Library card number and PIN handy as most of these resources require them.

OverDrive also gives you access to hundreds of ebooks in the public domain. This means that these books do not expire and do not count against your checkout limit of four ebooks or e-audiobooks. Titles in the public domain include classic books by authors such as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Jane Austen.

In addition to OverDrive, we also offer thousands of ebooks and e-audiobooks from NC LIVE, a consortium of North Carolina public and academic libraries. For more information about NC LIVE’s ebooks, or to browse their collection, visit the NC LIVE Ebook page.

If you’re looking for ebooks for children or teens, our OverDrive collection has a great selection of picture books, easy readers and young adult fare. We also offer access to Tumblebooks, a site that provides animated, talking picture books. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which children can read, or have read to them.

These resources are just the beginning of DCL’s digital collection. We have more digital content coming in 2014 that we know you will love. Stay tuned…
