American wife

By curtis sittenfeld

I enjoyed the first half of this novel but after Alice and Charlie got married it got rather boring. Their marriage stressed me out. I didn’t like that Alice was still “in love” with Andrew. Charlie’s behavior was appalling. His sudden conversion to Christianity was hard to take – maybe because I am a follower of Christ, reading about someone’s conversion from the point of view of an agnostic felt a little weird. It wasn’t very believable that he would become president. The whole final section about Alice’s abortion was difficult, again maybe because my own personal beliefs conflict with Alice’s. Also I felt all the introspection in the last part of the book was a little boring and I really didn’t like that Alice didn’t vote for her own husband, but I suppose I can understand why.
