About: Durham County Library, in conjunction with Northgate Mall and Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, will host a celebration in honor of National Summer Learning Day from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Discovery Nook in the Children’s Alleyway at Northgate Mall, 1058 W. Club Blvd.

Summer Learning Day is a national holiday that promotes awareness of continued learning throughout the summer in communities across the county. The events give students and families a safe and healthy opportunity to continue academic growth over the summer months, so that they are prepared and ready to learn when school begins. Youth Services Administrator Karlene Fyffe Phillips shares this commitment to advocating summer time learning.

“Programs like the Summer Learning Day Celebration are great ways for students to stay engaged and committed to learning,” Phillips said. “They promote academic growth and individual development – all while having fun!”

Not only will the celebration provide students and families with fun activities, but it will also promote awareness of the many summer learning opportunities available to students both at the library and in the community.

The celebration will include a story time and skit performed by the Library Youth Partners, a science presentation by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s STEMville, and a book giveaway courtesy of RIF (Reading Is Fundamental). Participants will also be able to enter a drawing for carousel rides and other prizes.

This program is sponsored by Northgate Mall and the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. For more information, contact Karlene Fyffe Phillips at 919-560-0172 or visit
