Program: Meet the Game Designer: Daniel Solis
Date: Thursday, August 14
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd.
Cost: Free and open to the public

About: Durham County Library will host award-winning game designer Daniel Solis for a talk about the art and craft of game design, as well as the process of creating his latest card game, Belle of the Ball, at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, at the Southwest Regional Library, 3605 Shannon Rd.

According to, “In the card game Belle of the Ball, players take on the roles of party hosts, seeking the best mix of guests to make their gala the greatest by the end of the night. In order to ensure that they stay one step ahead of the other hosts, players will have to carefully watch the growing line of guests at the door, inviting those in that seem to share passions with partygoers already inside, all the while handing out their precious stash of Regrets to those who should seek refuge elsewhere.” Ken Grazier of Geek-Craft calls it “Quick enough to get a game in without feeling rushed, strategic enough that there is the occasional pause to figure out the best move. It’s a great balance of luck and strategy.”

Daniel Solis is the designer of several games including the storytelling games Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple and Happy Birthday, Robot, as well as a diverse range of card games like Koi Pond, Regime, Monsoon Market, Nine Lives and Penny Farthing Catapult. He has also worked as a graphic designer and art director for other creators’ games and books, such as the Firefly role-playing game. Solis has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication from University of Oklahoma, and has won many awards including the 2012 Origins Vanguard Award.
