About: Durham County Library will host a virtual tour of Durham’s Sister City, Arusha, Tanzania at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, at the Main Library, 300. N. Roxboro St.
Program participants will learn about the Arusha Committee of Sister Cities of Durham and Friends of Arusha, who have worked to support orphaned children, build a medical facility, initiate a women’s sewing collaborative, and most importantly, share their cultural, entrepreneurial and educational experiences for almost 25 years. Tanzanian delicacies and tea will be served.
Arusha has a population of more than 400,000 and has been Durham’s Sister City since 1991. It is a democracy with a fast growing economy and sits on a high plateau of the African Rift Valley just below the equator. Arusha is surrounded by five National Parks including Serengeti, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Olduvai Gorge. It is a rich mosaic of cultures including the Masai peoples.
