Increased Checkout Limits for OverDrive and hoopla!

limits_increase_post_image

With the increasing popularity of our digital offerings, demand is higher than ever. That’s why we’re excited to announce the increase of checkout limits for our OverDrive and hoopla collections.

OverDrive

Our primary ebook and e-audiobook service, OverDrive, now has over 10,000 items available for checkout, and we want you to have them! Beginning immediately, we are more than doubling the amount of items you can have checked out at one time, increasing the limit from 4 to 10! In addition, you no longer have to feel rushed to get through your book, because the maximum checkout time has increased from 14 to 21 days!* The amount of items you can have on hold will remain at five.

* If you had previously changed your default checkout period, you may need to go into your settings to set the 21 day checkout period. To increase your default checkout period, sign in to your OverDrive account, click Settings from your Account page and change your Lending Period for ebooks and audiobooks to 21 days.

hoopla

We have been extremely pleased with the response to hoopla, our streaming video and music service. When we first launched hoopla in December, you could only checkout 4 items per month. Today, we are increasing that limit to 10 checkouts per month! hoopla lending periods will remain the same as they were before at 3 days for video, 7 days for music and 21 days for audiobooks.

If you haven’t tried hoopla yet, give it a shot. You’ll find movies, TV shows, music and audiobooks available at any time, with no holds. If you want more information about the service, visit our hoopla page.

We hope you enjoy even more items from our digital collections with these new limits!

If you have any questions about either of these services, ask at your favorite DCL location, or email librarywebmaster@dconc.gov.

This is fantastic news on the Hoopla front – my daughter burns through 1-hour audiobooks so quickly. However I’m not sure why the change on the Overdrive “out at one time” limit and it seems like it will just make for longer waiting for audiobooks. You can’t really listen to more than 2-4 audiobooks at the same time, so having 10 out for 21 days means 210 title-days that titles can’t be checked out by other people. Since Overdrive checkouts are on an exclusive basis (as opposed to Hoopla) this seems like it will just make waiting for Overdrive digital audiobooks an even longer process.

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, we cannot choose one checkout limit for ebooks and another for e-audiobooks. However, I understand your point. Before making these changes, we looked at our statistics to determine what impact changes would have on holds. Based on the statistics for audiobooks, we don’t feel like the wait will increase a significant amount. We also purposefully didn’t increase the hold limit to help reduce wait. Additionally, we keep track of how many holds an item has, and, if needed, purchase additional copies of the item to meet demand so the hold line does not get too long. I hope that answers your question.

Thank you for the longer time with books on OverDrive! I really enjoy using my tablet to read books but hated feeling rushed to finish. And when I didn’t finish & the book was gone that was very frustrating because I had to wait get it again & remember where I was in the story. That’s was a downer. Now when I travel, I download a book & relax & read it on the plane or wherever I go! Thanx so much for more time!!!
