About: Durham County Library presents its fifth annual Durham Comics Fest with guests, prizes, workshops and activities for children, teens and adults from Thursday, July 23 to Sunday, July 26 at various locations.

This year’s guest cartoonists include Jimmy Gownley (Amelia Rules!), Nick Bertozzi (Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey and Lewis & Clark), Jim Ottaviani (Feynman, Primates, and Bone Sharps, Cowboys and Thunder Lizards) and Malcolm Goff (Running for Hope: A Novel by the John Hope Franklin Young Scholars). Workshops and presentations will cover cartooning basics, writing and drawing for comics, creating historical fiction and nonfiction comics and self-publishing. The main event will also feature a comic book swap and local artists’ alley, where guests will be able to meet members of the local comics scene to chat about their process and work. Registration is required for select events. Visit durhamcomicsproject.org for registration information.

The Fest will include a screening of the film She Makes Comics on Sunday, July 26. The film traces the history of women in the comics industry from the medium’s beginnings in the late 19th century to the present day. Contains some adult language and artwork. Screening made possible by the Durham Library Foundation.

Comics Fest is made possible by the Friends of the Durham Library. For details and a complete schedule, visit durhamcomicsfest.org or call 919-560-8590.
