Back of Beyond

By CJ Box

Recovering alcoholic, Cody Hoyt lives up to his rogue cop reputation in this story that pits men and their children against villainous profit seekers and the untamed inhabitants of ttheunexplored portions of Yellowstone Park. Box tells his story by switching between two narrators. This technique slows the reader and helps create suspense. Chapters are between six to twelve pages so the pace is still quick.
Enough gore and violence is portrayed to keep the reader’s adrenaline up but not overwhelm. Issues of trust between coworkers, corruption and greed, a father’s duty to his children, management of national parks are all hinted at or explored.
