Durham, NC – Durham County Library presents Harper’s Ferry Five: A Presentation by Peter H. Wood on Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. at Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville St., Durham, NC 27701. This event is free and open to the public.
Join Peter H. Wood, Professor Emeritus of History at Duke University, for a discussion on his research The Harper’s Ferry Five: Tracing the Roots of John Brown’s Actual Plan for 1859, and the Southern Black Freedom Fighters who Joined Him. John Brown is well known, but his design for the 1859 Raid at Harper’s Ferry remains largely misunderstood, and the African Americans in his party are virtually unknown. They included Lewis Sheridan Leary, who was born in Fayetteville, and John Anthony Copeland, who was born in Raleigh.
