Aama vol. 1-4 by Frederik Peeters
With guidance from a gorilla-shaped AI, amnesiac Verloc Nim learns the reason why his miserable, drug-riddled life has landed him on a remote planet populated only by a group of rogue scientists. By turns absurd and touching, Aama is a beautiful work of science fiction and proof that Frederik Peeters is the inheritor to the throne of the late Belgian master cartoonist, Moebius.
Gun, With Occasional Music by Jonathan Lethem
Follow hapless P.I. Conred Metcalf as he weaves his way through a sideways-future Oakland, CA. Brainy babies, sentient animals, social standing via karma points, and free-flowing drugs like Forgettol and Acceptol fill this sci-fi noir to the brim, bouncing it between absurd humor and kangaroo gut punches of despair and cynicism.
Inherent Vice DVD
In PT Anderson’s adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel, Joaquin Phoenix stars as private eye Doc Sportello, who gets a tip from his ex about a billionaire land developer and a kidnapping plot. But late-in 1960s Los Angeles, the air is thick with love and reefer: a potent combination for losing one’s focus.
