Over the past year, Durham County Library has hosted six Go For Launch! events where students in grades 8-12 worked with an astronaut and other experts in the science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields to design an experiment that could be conducted in space. Students presented their experiments, and in each event, a winning group was named.

Now, one overall winning group from the Durham Go For Launch! series will have their experiment chosen to launch to the International Space Station to be conducted in space!

Durham County Library will hold an awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 13 at 6:45 p.m. at the Durham Armory to announce the series winner. The program will feature a talk from astronaut Greg “Box” Johnson, a veteran of two space shuttle flights to the International Space Station, and brief summaries by the students of the six winning experiments from the Durham Go For Launch! events.

The overall winning experiment is targeted for launch to the International Space Station on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket later this year or early in 2019. Thanks to support form the Durham Library Foundation, the winning group will be able to travel to Cape Canaveral, Florida to watch the launch in person.
