Every summer, as part of Durham County Library’s Summer Reading Program, we celebrate a reader from each of Durham County Library’s locations. This week we’re featuring siblings Isai and Elizabeth. They enjoy coming to the tutoring program during the school year and the Read to Me programs over the summer.
Isai is 8 and is going into 3rd grade. Isai hasn’t always liked reading, but last year, that changed. Now he thinks reading is fun, and his mom can’t get him to stop reading! She said he reads constantly, and his grandmother even laughs because she never sees him not reading. Isai’s goals this summer are to learn more about science and to learn more reading strategies. He really loves the true facts science books and also joke books.
Elizabeth is 6 and will be going into the 1st grade. Her favorite things about the library are the reading and tutoring programs at the MakerLab because someone helps her learn new words and she can look at the pictures. She said she really loves books (visual dictionaries) that have pictures with the words underneath. Some of her other favorite books are the Pete the Cat series by Eric Litwin and the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems.
Durham County Library encourages reading every day and all summer long! If your teens or children haven’t been to the summer-long Read to Me programs at the MakerLab from 4:30 – 6 p.m. on Mondays (except July 2) and at South Regional Library on Tuesdays (except July 3) from 4:30 – 6 p.m., come check it out! Teen volunteers (we do need more!) read to kids ages 4 to 10 years old. We hope you will come check it out! No registration is required. If you’re a teen interested in volunteering, email Monica Belford, the Hispanic Services Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Summer Reading Program at Durham County Library is free and open to people of all ages. The website to sign up to earn points and receive prizes is DurhamCountyLibrary.org/summerreading. This year’s theme is Libraries Rock! Isai and Elizabeth say “Libraries rock because you can get as many free books as you want!”
