In FY19, Durham County Library received a $95,000 grant<\/strong> from the State Library of North Carolina for Practicing Inclusivity: Establishing a Multi-Sensory Environment, Inclusive Playroom, and Mobile Adaptive Technology Units for Transformation Main. <\/em>In FY2020, the initiative was awarded $106,062 for a second year of the project to include creating a permanent sensory space in Main Library. Through inclusive spaces, programs, and staff training, this grant helped make all our libraries more welcoming environments for individuals with sensory processing differences and special needs, their families, and caregivers.
 
The initiative centers on the needs of the whole person, whether adapting programs, spaces, technologies, or resources to meet people\u2019s needs. Sensory elements are now at all library locations, including bubble walls at five libraries. Inclusive programs have included a Neurodiversity Book Club, sensory-friendly programs, and a semi-permanent sensory room at one library location. Additionally, staff training has resulted in increased interest and expertise on the part of library staff to create a welcoming and accessible environment for people with special needs. The newly renovated Main Library features a permanent Inclusive Play Area, a Multi-Sensory Environment, and a Sensory Calming Room.
 
In the spring of 2020, the library was honored for its inclusivity initiative with a 2020 Achievement Award<\/a> from the National Association of Counties.
