A Message From the Director<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dear Durham Community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like so many organizations and businesses last fiscal year, Durham County Library was faced with closing our doors to the public to curb the spread of COVID-19. Since then we have had to figure out how to live our mission to encourage discovery, connect the community, and lead in literacy without the physical meeting spaces of our libraries.

Our staff quickly implemented a program whereby people without library cards could access the library\u2019s digital resources with their phone number during the library\u2019s closure and worked behind the scenes to ensure that a robust selection of digital resources continued to be available. In June we began Library Take-Out! services for customers to place holds on books for pickup. We launched virtual programs, delivered meals, expanded our hotspot checkout program, pitched in at the Department of Health and Human Services, and made sure that major library projects and initiatives continued. Throughout this time, I have been buoyed by the good will of the community and the good work of library staff and our colleagues across departments in Durham County Government.

One thing the temporary closure of our libraries has impressed upon me is that the library will persist. We are a critical resource and access point to information, literacy, fellowship, and resources for our community. We don\u2019t know what the future holds, but I know that we will rise to the challenges that confront us to continue serving our community. I wish you health and happiness during these difficult times, and I thank you for being part of our library community.
