“I’m inspired by the commitment of staff at Durham County Library and inspired by the support we receive from the community. “ ~ Tammy Baggett-Best
When I look across the landscape of Durham and all of the growth we are seeing, particularly in downtown, I’m reminded of a quote by Keith Richards: “The public library is the great equalizer.” Those words speak volumes to the mission of our library system – encourage discovery, connect the community, lead in literacy. When you enter the doors of our libraries, it’s a no judgement zone. We take great pride in helping everyone. It’s our goal to meet you where you are and provide you whatever library service is needed. We are in a position to help change lives.
I know libraries during my youth had a lasting impact on my life. As I mentioned in a previous blog, I grew up on a farm in rural Sampson County, NC. My parents always made sure I had my personal collection of books, but they also gave me the gift of a library card and regular visits from the “bookmobile ladies.” While I didn’t often visit the brick and mortar location in Clinton, I did have the luxury of the bookmobile coming to my home every three weeks during the summer. It brought great joy watching from the living room window for the bookmobile to pull into the driveway. I was always ready with my “library basket” in hand to return books I’d read and check out new books that would allow me to travel the corners of the earth all summer long. I developed a true love of reading and I believe it lead me to the library profession.
That’s the kind of impact I hope we are having in the community. Helping children find the joys of reading, helping to improve literacy in its many formats; traditional literacy, health literacy, financial literacy, STEAM literacy and more. Helping adults with computer skills, resume writing, genealogical research, etc. Libraries are places of great importance to a vibrant community. I’m inspired by the commitment of staff at Durham County Library and inspired by the support we receive from the community. Together we are having a lasting impact and adding to the quality of life in Durham.
