Libraries Rock! That’s the theme for Durham County Library’s 2018 Summer Reading Initiative. Our summer reading kickoff was held on June 9 at Northgate Mall and was well attended by the community, with people of all ages participating in a day of fun and promotion of reading during the summer months.
In all of the heat and rain that we may experience this month, I hope we all find time to celebrate our mothers and our graduates. I consider my mom as a best friend and truly value the many life lessons that she has instilled in me.
Program attendance often averages upward of 60 people and feels like a wonderful family gathering as most of those in attendance are longtime residents of Durham County. Don’t worry, newcomers are encouraged to attend and greeted with great Southern hospitality.
Here at Durham County Library we often speak of the library family. This month I want to highlight the Friends of the Durham Library and their generous giving to staff and the community.

When I look across the landscape of Durham and all of the growth we are seeing particularly in downtown I’m reminded of a quote by Keith Richards, “The public library is the great equalizer.” Those words speak volumes to the mission of our library system.

Success looks very different for each of us. In libraries success is typically measured by door count, items circulated and program attendance. I’m pleased to say that we look pretty good from a statistical stand point. This year I want to take a closer look at areas of impact that speak to my heart and hopefully to the heart of many of our users…
Some of my favorite topics include nature, books, the community, and of course, libraries. It’s even better when I have an opportunity to weave the four topics together…
