Meet the Artist: Volkan Alkanoglu

Volkan Alkanoglu is a designer based in Portland, Oregon. His work is focused on the pursuit of novel form through spatial, material, and technological explorations.
Recent work has been permanently installed in several institutions within the United States, including Clemson University, Boston - Clippership Wharf, University of Maryland in Baltimore, Yeshiva Museum in New York, Fort Lauderdale International Airport, University of Oregon in Eugene, Salt Lake Community College, Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Washington Metropolitan Police Training Facility, Fort Lewis College in Durango and the University of Colorado in Denver.
As an educator, Volkan Alkanoglu previously served as the Director for Graduate Studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, design faculty at SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, and lecturer at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in Cambridge.
Volkan Alkanoglu is a LEED Accredited Professional in the U.S. and is currently commissioned on a range of projects in California, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, and Texas.

Join Gracey from the STEAM department at Durham County Library for a live tutorial on creating and editing your very own 3D model (see details below about accessing TinkerCAD). Participants can even submit a model through this link (http://durhamcountylibrary.org/libraryfest/photo-contests/) for our staff to digitally design and 3D print for all to see!

Art and the Environment with the U.S. EPA - (for 1st – 6th graders)

Artists have been using nature as inspiration for their artwork for thousands of years! Join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during Library Fest for a fun, relaxing, and creativity-filled 45-minute session about landscape artists from the past and present and why artists love to use the environment in their artwork. Participants will get the chance to create their own environmental artwork while they take a few moments out of their day to relax, breathe, and reconnect with nature. Intended for 1st--6th graders to enjoy. Attendees should bring their own paper and art supplies.

How we produce electricity impacts human health and the environment! Join us during Library Fest for a 90-minute session of the U.S. EPA’s virtual board game, GENERATE, and learn how energy choices impact air quality and climate. Participants will virtually play this interactive board game and learn about the costs/benefits of different types of fuel for electricity. The game is based on an energy model used by the EPA to optimize cost, air quality, and climate impacts.
