Teen Services and Children’s Services at East Regional Library combined efforts to offer an outdoor “Global Launch” for the community during our Summer Reading celebration in July 2019. The theme for Summer Reading was “A Universe of Stories,” and July was the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Teens, children, and parents made baking soda rockets together using supplies provided by the library. Everyone had a blast, especially with the baking soda rockets! We laughed, enjoyed the hot days of summer, and learned about science (especially gravity and combustion)!

East Regional Library’s Teen Services offered coding classes to tweens and teens during the fall of 2019 and the spring of 2020. Angelina Patel, founder of KidsCode in Chapel Hill, taught youth about coding during a series of workshops, building their skills and confidence during consecutive workshops. Many of the tweens and teens were excited to have an opportunity to learn more about coding in a fun and relaxed program provided by the library.
