Bikes and Books Bring Safety and Friendship to Durham County

In 2019, Durham County Library teamed up with Durham Bicycle Cooperative and other agencies and nonprofits for Durham Housing Authority Project 2019. Durham County Library staff, including Derrian Jones and Patricia Felton, staffed the bookmobile, and I worked on bike repairs and helmet sizing.

The repair program is an extension of the Bike Co-Op’s regular bike helmet safety program, which has been supported by several library staff and the Bookmobile. As reported by Carole Stern to the Co-Op’s board, “At one of the safety events held at the Hoover Road Community, several children commented that the new helmets were very nice, but their bicycles needed repairs, and many children lacked bicycles.” In response, Carol Reardon, Fire Safety Captain for the Durham City Fire Department, convened a meeting with Greg Garneau and Carole Stern from the Co-Op and Sergeant Daryl Macaluso from the Durham Police Department. The group made plans to host repair sessions on a monthly basis at the Durham Housing Authority (DHA) communities. Those sessions took place later in 2019.

Durham Public Housing locations throughout the county were well served by this partnership, which provided bike repairs, helmets, and books. In 2019, eight sessions were held at these DHA communities: Cornwallis Road (two sessions), Oxford Manor, Hoover Road (two sessions), McDougald Terrace, Morreene Road/Damar Court, and Naples Terrace. During these events, 275 helmets were fitted/provided, 207 bicycles were repaired, and 155 children’s bicycles were distributed.
