Renew your account

All regular, non-temporary cards at Durham County Library expire after 3 years. (Other account types may expire sooner.) You can find your card expiration date under My Settings in your online account.

You can renew your card below if you currently live in Durham County and you have:

  • A full-privileges adult resident card, or
  • A full-privileges juvenile resident card, and you have not yet turned 18.

If you had a juvenile card and have turned 18: you can update to an adult card by visiting any of our locations and showing your photo ID and proof of address at the checkout desk. That could be one item (like an NC driver’s license with your current address) or two separate items (like a student ID plus a piece of mail with your name and address on it).

If you have a non-resident card: you can renew your card and pay the $45 annual fee by contacting us online. Include your name and card number in your message.

For all other card types: to renew your account, visit any of our locations and show your photo ID and proof of address at the checkout desk. That could be one item (like an NC driver’s license with your current address) or two separate items (like an employment ID plus a piece of mail with your name and address on it).

If you currently have a non-temporary card, you will be able to keep using your same card and barcode number when you renew.

Privacy note: when you renew your library card online, the online renewal system checks a limited set of the data from the renewal form against a third-party data brokerage service to verify Durham County residency. The data service does not communicate directly with the library’s catalog software and has no access to account activity like checkouts, borrowing history, or fees. If you opt to not use the online renewal system, you can renew in person at any of our library locations.
