August 2022 Library Update

It’s that time of year again – back to school season! As you change your sleep schedule, one thing that won’t change is how our community uses the library. ‘Tis the sea-son for Summer of Learning: Oceans of Possibilities! Here’s your reminder to check out fun summer of learning programs left to be had this month via our Events calendar. We are so happy to provide our community with resources throughout the year. I’ve been especially grateful that our locations have been able to act as an escape from the heat these past couple weeks. We always strive to be the resource that you can turn to in times of need.

Another program I’d like to recognize is our Innovation League. This new program received a National Association of Counties (NACo) award last month for its adaptable, themed learning experiences for underserved and low-income youth throughout Durham. Innovation League is an important program implemented last year by STEAM Services Manager Gracey Gordon and Teen Services Librarian Ciera Williams. Gordon and Williams embody the mission and vision of the library with their program; the recognition for their hard work is well-deserved. Williams also received a shoutout from Haelee P. Moone, 14-year-old author of “The Rules of a Little Boss: A book of self-love.” Read about the vision board party Moon hosted at Main Library last month and the wonderful Durham County Library shoutout in her website blog post.

As we continue later into the month, I am happy to announce an additional public forum on August 17 to envision the renovation of the system’s Stanford L. Warren Branch Library. We hope to provide a further opportunity for members of the community to share their thoughts and input. The visioning session will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the W.D. Hill Recreation Center at 1308 Fayetteville St. in Durham on Wednesday, August 17. Save the date and attend if you can. View our press release or information in the newsletter below for more details.

Another date to mark in your calendar for this month: Wednesday, August 31. Durham County Library will be holding a Community Job Fair! We will have various employers attending and looking to hire. If you’re interested in attending, feel free to use our online job resources to prepare as you’d like and attend from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Check our Events calendar as we update information on participating locations, employers, and resources.

Until next time,
Tammy
