The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

This is great book intended for young people. It was recommended to me by my niece who read it in honor of National Banned Books week last year (http://www.ala.org/bbooks/). Alexie’s book does not shy away from ugly truths about being poor, weird and part of an Indian reservation with major alcohol abuse problems. The diarist, Junior/Arnold, is a 14-year-old Spokane Indian who loves to draw. The book is filled with his cartoons and his take on being an outsider both in the white community and on the reservation. I loved Junior and I admired his courage and will to succeed despite the odds. I’m so glad books like this are available at our library.
