Summer Reading 2026 will take place over eight weeks, running from Monday, June 15, to Saturday, August 8, 2026. This year’s theme, “Unearth a Story,” celebrates the joy of discovery that reading brings. Programs and special events will be hosted at all seven Durham County Library locations, with each offering a unique lineup. Summer Reading is a fun experience for the entire community – patrons of all ages are invited to participate. We look forward to reading and learning with you!

About Summer Reading

What is Summer Reading?

Durham County Library’s (DCoL) Summer Reading is a literacy-based initiative that encourages people of all ages to keep reading and learning throughout the summer months by tracking their reading efforts, participating in enriching educational programs, and winning prizes!

When does the program start and end?

DCoL’s Summer Reading will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and end on Saturday, August 8, 2026. It will run for about eight weeks, spanning the majority of Durham Public Schools’ summer break.

Each location will host a fun Summer Reading kickoff event in June.

Where is it taking place?

Summer Reading happens at all seven DCoL locations as well as out in the community. Each location will offer a unique lineup of themed programs and events, including exciting kickoff parties! Join us for storytimes, crafts, performances, workshops, and more. To see all the fun coming your way, please visit our events calendar. Please check individual program listings for details, as some events may require registration.

Who can participate in Summer Reading?

Anyone can participate in Summer Reading! From newborns to seniors and all ages in between, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Is Summer Reading accessible to people of all abilities?

Yes, Durham County Library strives to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can access our services and resources. If you have any accessibility questions or accommodation needs, please contact the event organizer or email Accessibility_Services@dconc.gov. We ask that all requests be made at least three (3) business days prior to the event to ensure we can provide the best accommodations possible.

Is there a cost to participate?

No, DCoL’s Summer Reading programs and resources are free, thanks to support from the Durham Library Foundation and the Friends of the Durham Library.

Do I need a library card to join?

No, you do not need a library card to participate in Summer Reading. If you don’t already have a card, though, we encourage you to sign up for one while you’re visiting!

Registration

How do I sign up for Summer Reading?

Just stop by any DCoL location starting June 15, 2026, to pick up a paper reading log and get started! No library card or online registration is needed – participation is free and open to everyone.

Where can I get a paper reading log?

Reading logs (in English and Spanish) will be available at every DCoL location. Come visit the information and/or checkout desks and ask a staff member – we’re happy to help you get started!

Can I join after the start date?

Yes! You can join Summer Reading anytime between June 15 – August 8, 2026. It’s never too late to start reading and participating in programs!

Participation

Can I turn in more than one reading log?

Yes! After completing one reading log, you can start again! Each completed reading log earns you another raffle entry, so the more you read, the more chances you have to win a grand prize! All reading logs must be returned by 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

How does the raffle work?

Each location will hold a raffle or lottery-style drawing for grand prizes at the end of Summer Reading. There will be four grand prizes at each location: one for preschoolers, one for elementary school-age kids, one for tweens, teens, and emerging adults, and one for adults. You can choose which raffle to enter – it doesn’t have to match your age group!

Is there an online option to track reading?

Not this year – the number of minutes read will be tracked manually using a paper reading log.

Do I have to read every day?

No, the reading log tracks total minutes read, not daily activity, allowing flexibility for different reading styles, abilities, and formats. For added fun, try setting mini personal goals, like reading every day or exploring a new genre.

My child cannot read yet – can they still participate?

Absolutely! Reading with your child counts, too – whether it’s being read to by a caregiver, sibling, or attending a storytime. Summer Reading is for all ages, including babies and toddlers.

Do audiobooks count?

Yes! Audiobooks, ebooks, graphic novels, being read to… it all counts! Any time spent engaging with stories and reading materials can be logged.

What if I lose my reading log?

No problem – just ask a staff member for a replacement. You can pick up a new log and continue tracking your reading from where you left off.

2026 Summer Reading is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Durham Library Foundation and the Friends of the Durham Library.
