Durham County Library to Celebrate Durham Historian Jean Bradley Anderson

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, Durham County Library will celebrate the 100th birthday of Jean Bradley Anderson, a local historian who has made immeasurable contributions to the understanding of Durham’s past. Her trailblazing Durham County: A History of Durham County, North Carolina first came to market in 1990 and was updated with a second edition in 2011. Durham County Library’s North Carolina Collection houses Anderson’s research papers. Her history of Durham County continues to inspire new generations of historians and remains a wellspring of information for those conducting research on Durham County.

Durham County Library Receives All-Clear Following Bomb Threat at Main Library

On the morning of Saturday, April 13, Durham County Library’s downtown Main Library location received a bomb threat related to one of its programming offerings. Upon receiving the threat at approximately 10:30 a.m., staff and patrons evacuated to a safe distance. Local law enforcement swept the building and confirmed that no threats were present, giving the building the all-clear.

Durham County Library to Celebrate Fourth Annual Library Fest: The Nature Edition

From Monday, April 8 to Saturday, April 13, Durham County Library will hold the fourth annual Library Fest. This year’s theme is The Nature Edition. With the generous support of the Durham Library Foundation, the Forest at Duke, and community partners, Library Fest will include world-class author talks, programs, and events. Headliners like Leah Thomas, Dr. John Francis, and Matías Murano will compliment dozens of nature-themed events being held throughout Durham.

Durham Library Foundation to Host “All Booked Up,” an After-Hours Party

On Saturday, April 29, 2023, the Durham Library Foundation will host All Booked Up, an after-hours party celebrating the library. Occurring alongside Durham County Library’s Third Annual Library Fest: The Storytelling Edition, All Booked Up will take place at Main Library from 7-10 p.m. The event will feature fantastic food and drink, a DJ, behind the scenes access, library tours, live demonstrations, and more.

Durham County Library and Durham Library Foundation to Host Third Annual Library Fest

Beginning Monday, April 24 and ending Saturday, April 29, 2023, Durham County Library and the Durham Library Foundation will host Library Fest: The Storytelling Edition. Following last year’s Food Edition and the inaugural edition in 2021, the Library is excited to feature headliners including Terry McMillan, Jeghetto, Chef Sean Sherman, and Sheila Turnage. There are many ways to tell a story, and our various free Library Fest programs reflect that theme.

Durham County Library to Collaborate on Architectural Modernism Program

Durham County Library will partner with several community organizations on a program entitled Mayberry Modernism: North Carolina’s Modernist Legacy. Featuring a headline lecture by USModernist and NCModernist founder George Smart, Mayberry Modernism will also include screenings of four documentary films throughout the day.

Friends of the Durham Library Award Scholarships to Durham County Library Staff

On December 8th, 2022, the Friends of the Durham Library (FODL) held a ceremony to award Durham County Library staff with scholarships for their continued education. Three library staff members, Hitoko Isono, Caroline Flory, and Nadia Merritt received scholarships toward graduate school tuition.
